I competed in the IBJJF Chicago Summer Open Jiu-Jitsu tournament in preparation for the IBJJF Master World tournament coming up later this month in Las Vegas.
I was grateful to have an opponent in the heavyweight division. The last few Chicago Opens had none, which leaves me the choice of going down an age group or two, or just doing the open division.
We had a good match. I was able to secure a light switch choke from side control for the win.
The open weight division had 7 competitors in total. I received a first round bye as the number one seed. The semi-final was a close one. I was able to secure one advantage point for the win.
The open weight final was also very close. At the end of regulation time neither of us had scored. The final decision was in the hands of the referee, who chose my opponent as the victor.
